Connecting with other students during lockdown

Connecting with other students during lockdown

We understand that it might be difficult to connect with other students during the lockdown in England, travel restrictions and remote study. Here are a few ideas for meeting others.

Queen Mary’s Students Union has a range of activities online in which you may interact with other students. These include Masterchef Challenge (Lunar New Year), watch parties, games nights and crafting and many other activities.

There are also *free* exercise classes online from the QMSU. Search ‘sport’ on the QMSU events page. I must confess that I did not know what Power PiYo was, but the combination of Pilates and Yoga sounds great!

If you are a native or proficient speaker of Arabic, Catalan, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish, you could sign up to be a volunteer to offer speaking practice sessions for language learners. If you are a language learner (like me!), look out for how to join the practise sessions in the next few weeks. These sessions, organised by the Language Centre at Queen Mary, are a fantastic way to speak to other students on different courses at Queen Mary. You might make a new friend 🙂

Host UK, which normally organises day visits and weekend stays in a UK household for international and European students is now offering Virtual Visits to a UK household. They explain it as follows:

Students can choose to add a Virtual Exchange to their visit and meet their host online. A Virtual Visit is 3 or more online sessions for the student and host to share and learn about each other’s cultures and offer international friendship in these difficult times.

Isn’t international friendship a lovely idea?

Finally, how about signing up to volunteer if you have some free time?

We hope that you find these suggestions helpful.
